CRC Expands Tour of Homes
Broader reach includes wider array of sustainability efforts
Plans are underway for the Center for ReSource Conservation’s 16th annual Tour of Sustainable Homes. The tour gives area residents an opportunity to visit homes that showcase a variety of practical ways for people to bring sustainability into their lives, including energy and water conservation, waste reduction, transportation, local agricultural practices and other aspects of sustainability.
On Sunday, October 2, roughly one dozen homes will open their doors for the all-day tour. When the tour began in 1995, it was known as the Tour of Solar Homes. However, rather than focusing solely on cutting-edge solar architectural designs and landscapes, the tour’s new name represents an effort to include homes that show the various and creative ways community members live sustainably.
“This year we’re looking to widen our net,” says Brad Queen, energy division director at the CRC. “We want to show community members that there are easily adoptable products, services, and practices that can enable them to conserve resources and contribute to their own household’s sustainability. We want to tap into local communities’ vast experience with sustainable lifestyles. The tour this year will showcase a wide array of homes that provide such examples.”
A new name for the tour isn’t the only way the CRC plans to make energy conservation more tangible. The application process for homes on the tour is shortened, too. Last year the tour featured energy smart homes in three clusters: Boulder, Louisville and Nederland. This year the CRC hopes to include clusters in Longmont and Lafayette.
“With strong community partnerships and great sponsors, we’re in a position to expand to new areas in Boulder County while also attracting people who may not have been on the tour before,” says Queen.
The CRC is now accepting applications from homeowners or contractors who would like their home or project to be featured on the tour. The application deadline has been extended to June 12.
