More from Colorado Ski Tunes
We mentioned Colorado Ski Tunes and their commitment to green business yesterday. Here’s a short Q&A excerpted from our chat with Brad Wolfe, the owner and founder of the company:
Boulder Weekly: You’ve made it a focus of both companies (Wolfe also owns and operates Organo-Lawn) to be environmentally friendly. Why is that?
Brad Wolfe: “That’s one of the reasons I started Organo-Lawn a couple of years ago, is to get rid of a lot of the chemicals. We also do a lot of other stuff, our uniforms are all organic cotton, our office is powered by 90 percent solar. We have a huge solar system and the 10 percent that we can’t produce is powered by wind, so we do that and then the biodiesel is a big one. [Ed: All of their delivery trucks run on biodiesel.] And we of course recycle paper. For the machine, the machine has this emulsion and there are two types of emulsion – emulsion basically cools the machine and makes it so the skis will slide properly when we’re running them through it. There is standard emulsion, which is relatively inexpensive, and then we have a biodegradable one, and we, of course, always buy the biodegradable one. We just try and reduce waste, and all the standards things, and then also a lot more.”
Weekly: We’ve heard that you’re looking into a wax-recycling program. How is that coming along?
Wolfe: “We are trying to figure that out. It’s a little hard, because when you tune a pair of skis, there is a lot of wax that is wasted. We’re trying to figure out how to recycle that, but unfortunately, there is a little bit of dirt and stuff in there, so we haven’t quite figured that out, but we’re getting closer. I’d say about half the wax that goes on the skis, half of it is wasted.”
