Mountain Sun Ales debut new winter beers
Mountain and Southern Sun Pub & Breweries in Boulder, and Vine Street Pub in Denver are rolling out the red carpet for several new beers this winter.
“We always have at least 20 beers on our tap board, most of which we’ve brewed in-house,” said owner Kevin Daly, “but we’re planning to keep increasing that number right up to our biggest event, Stout Month, in February.”
Head down to Southern or Mountain Sun and try these delicious suds.
Redemption Red: A hoppy red ale with a strong malt back bone
O.G.: 1.072
ABV: 7.8%
Malt: 2 row, aromatic, crystal 120L, Black
Hops: Chinook, Amarillo, Saaz
Recently released, available from now throughout winter 2010
Dropkick Stout: An extremely roasty, American style stout, with a noticeable American hop profile
O.G. 1.068
ABV: 6.5%
Malt: 2-row, Aromatic, Special B, Chocolate, Roasted Barley
Hops: Columbus, Amarillo
Available now through Stout Month (February 2010)
Pre-Prohibition Pilsner: This pilsner is an early American style lager which was popular in the U.S. prior to Prohibition. They brewed this beer in the traditional style using a small percentage of flaked maize (corn). Because these beers were typically brewed by German immigrants, it uses traditional German Hallertau Hops. This is the pubs’ first lager in three years. This beer is crisp, hoppy, and full of flavor.
O.G. 1.054
ABV: 5.6%
Malt: 2-row, Pilsner, flaked maize
Hops: Northern Brewer, Hallertau, Saaz
Available now
Winter Lager: A malty, dark lager to celebrate the winter season. Brewed with a German lager yeast that dates back to the 1500s.
O.G. 1.080
ABV: 7.9%
Malt: 2-row, Munich, Aromatic, Caraffa II
Hops: Northern Brewer, Glacier
Available now-February 2010
C’est la Vie: This is Scott Overdorf’s last recipe, and is a traditional Belgian Style Saison featuring Belgian Pilsner Malt and buckwheat. They blended two Belgian and French Saison yeasts, which lend a unique flavor of tropical fruit (think passion fruit, mango, etc). The buckwheat gives the beer a pronounced “earthiness,” which is characteristic of the style. No spices.
ABV: 6.9%
Malt: Pilsner, Munich, Buckwheat
Hops: Glacier
Available: Now until it runs out
Resolution Ale: This Belgian Strong Golden Ale will be released to celebrate the new year when the pubs re-open their doors after the holiday break on January 2, 2010. The specialty yeast used in this brew provides a distinct fruit character and an extremely dry finish. This beer is highly effervescent, and deceptively strong. Enjoy Resolution like a fine champagne.
ABV: 8.9%
Malt: Pilsner
Hops: Saaz
Available: January 2nd until it runs out.
